Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won the gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Games, but took off the following season due to injury. Tatiana and Max returned back to the competitive scene last season after getting married in the summer of 2015. When the team returned to competitive skating, they quickly discovered that the landscape of pair skating had shifted in their absence.

Volosozhar and Trankov were so incredibly impressive that many teams began to push the limits technically in order to defeat Tatiana and Max, who were known for giving perfect performances and receiving record breaking scores. It was clear at the 2016 World Championships that pair skating had gone to another level and Tatiana and Max struggled to stay in the mix. They were successful in the short program, but had a less than ideal free skate and finished in a disappointing sixth place.

I remember watching this team at the press conference at the World Championships and it was obvious that there was a lot of love between them and that they were beginning to crave a normal life and even talked about having kids. According to Russian news agency TASS, their coach, Nina Mose said that Volosozhar and Trankov will not be competing this season.

After being defeated at the World Championships this past spring it is possible that this team is considering retirement. They have to know that if they want to come back and fight for a second Olympic gold at the 2018 Games, they will have to give it their all and it is hard to say if that competitive fire is still there for them. They might be ready for a new chapter in their lives.

Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov have yet to make an official statement about the reasons behind their absence this season. At this point many are speculating that they will retire, but only they know where they are at as a team and as a couple. Regardless of what they chose, this team has given the sport so much and given the audience some unforgettable moments.

UPDATE 09.21.16

The mystery has been revealed–Tatiana and Maxim are expecting their first child which is why they will not be competing this season. According to a Russian news outlet Tatiana is due in February. The husband-wife team have yet to announce if they will retire or attempt to return for the 2018 Olympic Games.
